Changing character names.

View the post Posted by Words to Hide Behind on Wed Sep 08, 2010 6:40 am

I have that issue, but with characters on the whole. You see, my story (for lack of a better term) has existed since seventh grade (I'm beginning university in a couple weeks), and since eighth grade, I have shared chunks of it on deviantART.

Now, as I'm sure you can imagine, it has changed quite a bit since then-- character names, traits, relationships, and so on. And this is really irritating, because now I have to accept the fact that who that character was last year... isn't who they are anymore, and a bunch of people have seen them before now. And so now I have to deal with that and I can't just quietly ignore my tenth-grade self being an awful writer. D:

...and that's why I feel accomplished.

View the post Posted by Words to Hide Behind on Wed Sep 08, 2010 6:34 am

I'm never sure how to write grief, because I don't know what people do when they find out that someone they've loved has died. The only people I've known who have died, I wasn't very close to them, and I'm not particularly emotional. : | So I'm never sure what qualifies as cardboard and what qualifies as overreacting.

But I mostly have issues with action scenes. My writing is really heavily influenced by classical literature, and you try writing an action scene when you sound like someone put Wilde and Goethe into a blender together. : |

Characters

View the post Posted by Words to Hide Behind on Wed Sep 08, 2010 6:25 am

It depends on what your aim is, I suppose. In some stories, the characters are very important, and in others, they are only a means of moving the story and making a point. The Grapes of Wrath, for instance, is a story that is more plot-driven, since the Joads are meant to represent all of the Okies on a personal level-- the story isn't about them, it's about impoverished farmers in the Great Depression. Crime and Punishment, though, I would call more character-driven, since it's about Raskolnikov's crime, his guilt, and his road to redemption.

Of course, these things aren't mutually exclusive, and plot-driven stories don't necessarily mean a lack of characterization, or vise versa.

But I wouldn't say that characters ever "write the story", for me. And I wouldn't say that they've ever done anything unexpected, at least from my perspective (but that would be hard to do if they don't write the story).

Digital Music Collection Vs. Physical Music Collection

View the post Posted by Words to Hide Behind on Wed Sep 08, 2010 4:50 am

I always buy CDs, unless it's a particular bit of music that I will never be able to get in a physical copy.

Recently, I got a new computer, and now none of the things I purchased on iTunes will play anymore, since most of them were purchased with my old iTunes account, which iTunes tells me doesn't exist anymore. And so. (I want my Beethoven's Last Night, damn it!) Admittedly, it's not a lot, but enough that I'm irritated. >:C

But I just love CDs, anyway-- the lyric books, the art, the care it took to put it together. c:

Freedom of Speech

View the post Posted by Words to Hide Behind on Wed Sep 08, 2010 4:36 am

Freedom of speech is a strange thing. On one hand, I believe that there are things that should not be said-- things that promote hatred and fear and so on. But at the same time, how would you regulate that? Even if freedom of speech did not encompass "hateful remarks", let's say, who would decide what does and doesn't qualify as a hateful remark?

So, personally, I have to side with freedom of speech. Even in regards to hateful comments, someone is not going to stop feeling something just because they can't say it, and the sentiment behind the words is what matters; and, while words are powerful, the best thing to do about hatred is not to ban the hateful comments, but to speak more of love and acceptance. By banning words, you lend them a kind of power-- that this is something dangerous, something that the culture or climate fears. If you let people say what they wish, but address what they say, I feel the result is more powerful than simply telling people, "Don't say that, it's bad."

And maybe that's a very idealistic and naive sort of view, but I believe that all people have the capacity for empathy and reason, if presented with the opportunity to expand those parts of themselves. (Though, perhaps that is a misguided bit of optimism, but there it is.)

Your opinion on sex

View the post Posted by Words to Hide Behind on Wed Sep 08, 2010 4:14 am

I think comprehensive sex education is a good thing-- knowledge is power, and all that. Certainly, there's no reason to give the same explanation for babies to very small children as you would to older children, I disapprove of people telling their children nonsense about storks and such.

I, personally, don't understand the demonization of sex and the human body, at least in the United States. I don't understand why it is implied that sex is this horrible, horrible thing and why the human body is something from which we should shield children. Sex is a normal, biological function, and the human body is what it is.

Trust issues.

View the post Posted by Words to Hide Behind on Wed Sep 01, 2010 12:03 am

Me, neither. D: If you don't trust someone, why would you date them?

Also, I don't understand women who take out their boyfriend's cheating (actual or perceived) on the other woman. : | She's not the one at fault-- your guy is. Your guy is the one who was unfaithful, and whether she went for him or the other way around, he is the one who betrayed your trust. So... I really don't understand that.

Dreams that might mean something

View the post Posted by Words to Hide Behind on Sat Aug 28, 2010 5:51 am

Dreams are just a mixture of stuff you've thought on or experienced lately-- there's no rhyme or reason to any of it.

Last night, I dreamt of Otto von Bismarck in space, solving the mysteries of the universe. I illustrated this here.

Militant, preachy vegetarians/vegans

The only thing I have to say against this is: At least in the united states, we produce more then 3 times the amount of food required to live a healthy and well-balanced livelihood. And, when considering that obesity rates continue to increase I can see how our lifestyle choices support our most unhealthy of lives. So... would I say that our food sources would suffer? No.

This brings me back to a discussion a few years ago that I had with a customer while working at a grocery store. We were discussing alternative fuel sources. I had suggested bio-diesel fuel as a great alternative source because it was purely made of vegetable oil and chemical compounds that would make it ignite. The customer that I was talking to said that was the worst idea because "we" (really speaking in her opinion though) should not expend our food source. However, as I said we consume more then 3 times the amount of food that we need and therefor produce that amount or more. I'll note that this woman was considerably over-weight as a means for her specific reason to not wanting to use bio-diesel. Not trying to be offensive in that it's just an observation. She also did not discuss with me her ideas for an alternative fuel source so it can be assumed that she supported oil drilling.

I meant more in the area of "there's no reason why we should make the animals we eat suffer more than necessary in the process of killing them for sustenance", since a common complaint I hear against meat consumption is animal suffering. I know that wasn't very clear on my part-- I guess I was feeling less than coherent this morning. :B

Braces... xox

View the post Posted by Words to Hide Behind on Tue Aug 17, 2010 4:08 pm

I do not miss braces. I got them maybe a week or two before I started seventh grade and only got them off September of my senior year (this past year). Admittedly, my teeth were pretty bad, but it shouldn't have taken that long-- we even cut the whole business short, because otherwise, I probably still would be wearing them and my teeth are straight enough. : |

After those first three or four days, though, your teeth don't hurt like that again, even after they're tightened. And I hope you get yours off sooner than I did. c:
